Integrated Contactor Panel - 4c

Many people, especially those who just purchased their first greenhouse environmental control system, don’t realize that they cannot connect a high voltage piece of equipment (e.g. an exhaust fan) directly to their electronic controller. The proper method to switch high voltage to a motor on is to use a high quality contactor. The contactor should be sized accordingly to meet the load required by the motor and to meet the local and national electrical code. It should be noted that for many motors, the use of relays instead of contactors is strongly discouraged because of the high current surges and voltage spikes associated with such inductive loads. The relays will most likely fail prematurely.

Once contactors are provided, they are often housed in a separate UL approved (cUL in Canada) enclosure and the whole panel is also UL approved per UL508A standard for industrial contactor panels. The environmental controller outputs are then connected to each of these contactors to turn on the appropriate high voltage loads at the appropriate time. In order to reduce installation cost and facilitate easier installations, Link4 has introduced the Integrated Contactor Panel option for its new Series 100 controllers.

With this option you will receive a panel with the controller (purchased separately), conveniently pre-mounted on the door for ease of installation. There’s no need to mount two separate boxes with conduits in between. The control wiring will also be pre-wired between the controller and the high voltage contactors. This reduces the electrician’s installation time and eliminates wiring errors. All connections and operations between the controller and the contactor panel will be verified prior to shipping so that you will have a worry free installation when it comes to control wiring.
